Local Attractions

Rock House Estate is situated within 100 acres of farmland. The area is rich in wildlife with deer, pheasants, sheep and next door, Alpacas.

The most popular activities include pony trekking, golf in nearby Alston and Allendale, swimming in Garrigill (the next village), Quad biking, climbing, birdwatching, canyoning, caving and mine exploration, cycling, mountain biking, and walking. There are folders with Ordinance Survey maps in each cottage with walks starting from your front door if you take the 20 minute walk along the river to the pub in Nenthead. From the top of the fell there are views of Hadrian's Wall and Scotland, and south to the Pennines. Hadrian's Wall is about an hour away by car.

The area also offers many places to visit: Alston with its cobbled streets used in the film Oliver Twist. In the Tees Valley is the High Force Waterfall, and Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle. There's Beamish Museum near Durham or visit Durham itself with its Cathedral and Castle. For the kids there's Diggerland near Durham where are real JCBs to ride. Visit the Lake District – we can suggest some of the quieter places including Ullswater taking a trip on the Ullswater steamers or take the road to Penrith which is one of the AA's 'Ten Best Drives in the World'.
