Hotel Description
Centred on a beautifully preserved, medieval 16th Century manor house steeped in history, Allt Yr Ynys (pronounced alt-ur-inis) is set in the foothills of the Black Mountains on the fringes of the magnificent Brecon Beacons National Park on the Welsh Borders between Abergavenny and Hereford.
Centuries back, the house was owned by the notable and highly influential Cecil (formerly Sistylt) family. Arguably the most illustrious of the Cecils was William - the 1st Baron Burghley (1521-1598) - who served as Chief Secretary of State and Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I for all but the last few years of her reign.
Allt Yr Ynys can be translated from Welsh as 'the gently sloping meadow between two rivers', a reference to the tongue of land between the rivers Monnow and Honddu in front of the hotel, and the fields up to the Cat's Back and the nearby picturesque village of Walterstone.
The perfect end to a perfect day! After a brisk walk or mountain biking in the surrounding hills, a pony trek, a country drive or a visit to one of the many exciting attractions, events and activities in the area (such as the Literary Festival at Hay-on-Wye, Hereford with its Cathedral, Mappa Mundi exhibition & Chain Library, racing at Chepstow and Hereford, the Abergavenny Food Festival, the Brecon Jazz Festival or a Welsh rugby international at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff) what better than a gentle swim in our indoor pool, a dip in our spa bath and a relaxing sauna. Then, a drink in the Cider Mill bar or panelled drawing room (with roaring log fires in winter) and a sumptuous meal in our award winning restaurant where you will taste the very best of modern British cooking complemented by wines from our carefully selected wine list.
Allt Yr Ynys offers 21 well appointed en suite bedrooms, both in the main house and in converted farm buildings situated throughout the delightful gardens. Most have views over the rivers, mountains and woodlands surrounding the hotel, and our oak panelled Jacobean 4 Poster Suite still retains an original 16th Century four poster bed.
The setting, quality and range of facilities, and its tranquil yet easily accessible location, also combine to make it an idyllic venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions. We pride ourselves on the care we take with all our guests, but give particular recognition to the fact that every wedding, as the most special of events, must be an enduring and pleasure filled memory.
A superb venue for a wide range of meetings and corporate events, conference and meeting facilities mirror the overall high standards of the hotel. Our 16 acres of formal gardens, pasture land, and woodland are often used for staging a wide variety of team building and leadership development exercises, and a number of corporate activities such as orienteering, mountain and rock climbing, abseiling, caving, paintballing, clay pigeon shooting, quad bike racing, hovercrafting and gorge walking can be staged at facilities at or within easy reach of the hotel.
Allt Yr Ynys is an excellent base for a very many outdoor and indoor leisure and recreational pursuits. In addition to our pool, sauna and spa bath, we boast our own covered clay pigeon shooting range, complementing first class walking, horse-riding, horse racing, caving, cycling, and many other activities nearby. And the needs of golfers of all standards are more than satisfied by 8 golf courses within a 30 minute drive from the hotel, with the nearest only a few minutes away. These include The Rolls at Monmouth, the Celtic Manor Resort, the Monmouthshire Golf Club in Abergavenny, Monmouth Golf Club in Monmouth and Wern Ddu.
