Local Attractions
Blairgowrie is ideally suited for touring. Perthshire has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The lovely Fife coast is not far, where one can visit East Neuk - small picturesque, old fishing villages as well as the famous golfing venues of St. Andrews. Also in St. Andrews is the Sea Life Centre.
Rosemount Golf Club in Blairgowrie has one of the finest courses in the area and there are another sixty golf courses within approximately one hour's drive of Blairgowrie - including St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Gleneagles. Fishing is readily available and there are castles in abundance. Glamis Castle is 20 miles from Blairgowrie and is the birthplace of Queen Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother. Blair Castle is 25 miles from Blairgowrie - the owner has his own private army.
There are many other castles, museums, gardens and places of historic interest to visit in the immediate vicinity as well as Dundee, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Kirriemuir, the birthplace of J. M. Barrie (Peter Pan) is a journey of fifteen miles. An added attraction in Kirriemuir is the Camera Obscura.
Another point of interest is the rebuilt Crannog on Loch Tay. This type of dwelling predates recorded history and was built on water to protect against attack by other tribes and wild animals.
There are number of whisky distilleries within easy reach, including the Famous Grouse Experience, the House of Dewar and the “smallest distillery in Scotland” at Edradour.
Visitor centres for Caithness Glass and Stuart Crtystal are nearby, along with many Scottish craft shops and centres.
The weather in the area is some of the best in the whole of the United Kingdom, being sheltered by mountains on the west from most of the rain. Don't believe the weather forecasts shown on television! Days are long in the summer - sometimes there is still light at midnight and dawn is not long after.
There are many good walks within easy reach, both high and low level. Perthshire is famous for its hill walking and mountaineering, including many Munros (mountains over 3000 ft) such as Ben Lawers and Schiehallion. During the winter months when there is sufficient snow, there is skiing at Glenshee (25 miles from Blairgowrie).
There are water sports centres at Loch Tay and Loch Earn and opportunities for gorge walking, mountain biking, off-road driving, horse riding and canoeing.
Glencoe - the site of the massacre in 1692 by the Campbells of the Macdonalds - is a comfortable day's excursion.
Bird watching is excellent. The famous Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Centre (Scottish Wildlife Trust) is approximately seven miles away. Ospreys nest there and otters can be seen in the loch. The RSPB centre at Vane Farm is about 30 miles away. Other reserves within easy reach afford sightings of puffins, guillemots, gannets and abundant wild fowl. Auchengarrich Wildlife Centre is approximately 35 miles away where one is able to handle chicks and rabbits and see eggs incubating/hatching.
The arts are well covered in the area. There are two well known museums/art galleries in Perth. The Perth Concert Hall was opened in 2005 and provides all kinds of music from classical orchestral and chamber music to folk, and the seats being removable to cope with pop concerts. The Perth Festival of the Arts and Music takes place each May, the Perth Repertory Theatre being one of the best in the UK. The Pitlochry Festival Theatre's Summer season lasts from May to September. In Dundee there is a theatre, concert hall, museums and galleries.
