The Location
There is so much to see and do in Ambleside itself. There is a wealth of specialist shops, a large number of good quality pubs and restaurants, including an excellent vegetarian restaurant. There are two cinemas, tennis courts, in season crown green bowling green, pitch & putt, crazy golf, a playground and park, picnic areas and a tourist information centre. Fell views are also available from Ambleside and in fact the breathtaking scenery around Lake Windermere is just a ten minute walk away.
With Ambleside being at the centre of the Lake District National Park, it is an ideal starting point for walking, both high level and easier slopes. For serious walkers there are Scafell, Helvellyn and the Fairfield Horseshoe. Close by are the gentler fells, Loughrigg and Wansfell, as well as many quiet valley and Riverside strolls.
There is never a best time to visit the Lake District, as each season has it own special magic with spectacular scenery which you will treasure in your memory forever.

Directions
From the South - Leave M6 motorway at Junction 36, turn left onto the A591 & follow this road for approximately 18 miles, until you reach the traffic lights on the outskirts of Ambleside. At the lights, take the left fork and follow this road for approximately 1.5 miles until it becomes a two-lane, one-way street. Remain in the left hand lane and follow the road round to the left and then right. The road then becomes two lanes as you reach the shops, you need to be in the right hand lane. Turn right at the lights at the top of the road and follow this road down for a few hundred yards until you pass the White Lion pub on the left. Take the next turning on your right, which is Church Street and you will find Hillsdale on the right hand side, at the bottom of this street.
From the North - Junction 40, M6 motorway. Follow signs for Keswick, then the B5322 (St. Johns in the Vale) to Thirlmere and Grasmere and then Ambleside. Shortly after entering the heart of Ambleside you will pass the White Lion pub on the left. Take the next turning on your right, which is Church Street and you will find Hillsdale on the right hand side, at the bottom of this street.
By Public transport:
Windermere is the closest station (5 miles). At Windermere station you can either take the '555' bus heading towards Keswick, or you can take a taxi through to Hillsdale.

The Bedrooms:
Hillsdale is fully centrally heated, all rooms have recently been modernised and we can offer eight fully en-suite guest bedrooms.
We have flexible accommodation to cater for doubles, twins, families and singles. All rooms have remote control colour TV's, hairdryer and radio alarm.
There is always constant and plentiful hot water, for that soothing shower after a long day out!
In all rooms you can make a brew from our complimentary tray including choccy biccies and relax watching TV before stepping out for an evening's entertainment. We have ironing facilities, secure bike storage and somewhere to dry your wet gear.
The Breakfasts:
We serve a hearty full English breakfast. We try to keep it as 'healthy' as possible, by using sunflower oil in cooking, semi-skimmed milk, low-fat spreads as well as lovely butter! We also offer a full vegetarian breakfast, plus yoghurts, choice of fruit juices and cereals
Leisure passes:
Guests of Hillsdale have free access to the leisure facilities available at a nearby hotel in Ambleside. Facilities include heated indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi & steam/sauna room and well-equipped gymnasium.
