B&B / Guest House Description
Cuidhe Leathain (pronounced coo-lane) and roughly translated from the Gaelic as MacLean's Corner, is a traditional Highland house within the conservation area of Tobermory, the Isle of Mull. From being a fine 19th Century family home, it became a highly esteemed grocer's and draper's and at one time, what is now the sitting room was the doctor's surgery. As the doctor was also the dentist, there are locals who still recall the terror of setting foot over the threshold.
Now a warm welcome awaits all those who come to Cuidhe Leathain. The house has been restored and refurbished and is once again a fine family home. Both the guest sitting and dining rooms have original Victorian fireplaces and are furnished with a wealth of paintings and photographs. There are books-a-plenty for guests who want to go armchair travelling on a rainy day and there is a large, secure garden to the rear of the house. Satellite television is available in the sitting room and all bedrooms have colour T.V. Guests can expect an especially friendly welcome, as Cuidhe Leathain is also the home to Morag, a Scottish Bearded Collie dog (beardie). Alan and Jeannette Hodson were regular visitors to the Isle of Mull for more than 25 years, before moving lock, stock and beardies to their most beautiful place in the world. Alan can provide information on eating-out, walking, driving and things to do - from whale watching and eagle spotting to traditional music. And, of course, there is the infamous Balamory Trail.
Bed and Breakfast at Cuidhe Leathain not only means the best in beds, but also the best in breakfasts - In addition to a choice of fruit juices and cereals, fresh fruit, fruit compote and yoghurt are provided and the porridge is made just the way Jeannette was taught by her Granny Morrison. There are Loch Fynne Kippers and Tobermory Smoked Trout, as well as eggs, whichever way you want them, with choice of full Scottish grill. You choose and we provide.
Bedrooms:
Large double room with super-king (6ft) bed, which can convert to twin. It has sofa and views over Calve Island to the Sound of Mull. There is a separate private bathroom with large Victorian bath (super-soft bathrobes are provided in all bedrooms).
Double room with king-bed (5ft). This room has views over Tobermory to the south of the island and has an en-suite shower, w.c. and h/c handbasin.
Double room with standard bed. This room can also be let for single occupancy and has h/c handbasin.
All rooms have colour television, radio and coffee/tea-making facilities. There are books galore and Highland Spring Water, Scottish shortbread and chocolates are also provided.
Scottish Tourist Board Assessment ***:
"Your love for the Isle of Mull and enthusiasm are shown in the way you operate your Bed and Breakfast and are a credit to yourselves and the local tourist industry. You have maintained a strong three-star award and the standards you offer will always leave the customer satisfied."
Beds, Linen, Bedding: "The beds, linen and bedding are outstanding with pristine sheets, duvets and over quilt and a fantastic range of full pillows."
Accessories: "An outstanding range of accessories with a very personal touch are available in all three bedrooms."
Breakfasts: "Granny Morrison's porridge was delicous and the cooked breakfast was of an excellent standard with well cooked free range poached eggs, bacon and black pudding."
Services: "Housekeeping throughout the house was excellent."
