B&B / Guest House Description

Situated amidst majestic trees in the tranquil countryside on the County Meath and Cavan border, Ross Castle commands magnificent views of Lough Sheelin, a 4500 acre lake famous for it's brown trout and liberally stocked perch and large pike.

he secluded setting and spacious, comfortable accommodation offer the visitor an exclusive retreat. The perfect situation to relax and unwind, away from the stresses and strains of modern city life, or as a venue for a private party or function.

There are plenty of things to keep the visitor busy for three or four busy daytours visiting many popular and interesting sites in Ireland.

The castle is entered through the original archway dating back to 1536 to an inner courtyard and lawn, surrounded by a stone wall and trees.

On the ground floor is a large entrance hall connecting the tower and sitting room. This large room, with a lovely open fireplace, has wide French Windows, giving a beautiful view across the lake.

The ground floor to the right of the entrance hall is where the Great Hall used to be. It contains a spacious sitting-room come dining-room with fireplace. Our own turf is used to light this every evening for guests to enjoy. This room is used for breakfast, dinner and sitting together in a cosy and chatty atmosphere by the fire.

The Master Bedroom, with a double and a single bed and it's own bathroom, has private access to the terrace. There are two other rooms which share a bathroom. The green room has a double and a single bed and the yellow room just has a double bed.

In the tower there are two double, en- suite bedrooms. One of these bedrooms is 65 steps up, the Upper Tower Bedroom. It has spectacular views of Lough Sheelin. The room itself is very big with an antique two poster bed. The other bedroom is 40 steps, the Lower Tower Bedroom. This room has a four poster bed. It has the original domed ceiling and also has beautiful views of the lake. In both of these rooms it is possible to pu up a single fold out bed. As you come into the tower, you come through a hall and up a spiral staircase into a spacious sitting room with fireplace. The accommodation is furnished throughout with antiques of excellent taste.

Local Attractions

Angling / Fishing
Wild brown trout, rainbow trout, salmon, pike, perch bream, roach, tench and eels are a few of the many types of fish available in this area. The extensive waterways such as the River Shannon, River Inny, Gowna Lakes and Lough Sheelin provide many a fine opportunity for some coarse and game fishing, this is an anglers paradise with a multitude of rivers and lakes. Try and catch brown trout or go coarse fishing. There are many small inland lakes in the area, excellent for fishing. Lough Sheelin is providing the most beautiful setting possible. Bird Watching
Why not relax and listen to the rare corncrake on the water meadows of the Shannon near the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise, or visit Clara and Mongans bogs or walk through the forests at Mullaghmeen.

Cruising
The Shannon-Erne Waterway is among the leading waterways in Ireland. Cruising on the River Shannon and Grand Canal is one of the most relaxing ways in which to spend a holiday. This area's extensive waterways prove a delight for anyone interested in a cruising holiday. A cruising holiday offers peace, tranquillity and much pleasure to the visitor on a well equipped boat.

Cycling
The scenery around the Shannon and the Loughs in the area is a beautiful accompaniment. The roads are not busy and amenity areas are a regular occurrence for all travellers. This area has a particular attraction for the cyclist in light of the fact that the dedicated cycling route from Killala in Co. Mayo to Ballinamuck in Longford is now open.

Flying
Learning to fly is not a problem in this region, where flying lessons are available from qualified instructors. Nearest airport is in Abbeyshrule.

Golf
Enjoy the pleasures of this area's excellent golf clubs. There are a number of excellent 18 hole parkland and link courses situated in this region providing a challenge to golfers of all levels. Golf courses are found in some of the most beautiful parts of this region, with a multitude championship courses to choose from. Nearest Golf course at Crover and at Virginia.

Greyhound Racing
A popular spectator sport where the thrill of the race ensures a thoroughly enjoyable day out. This is present in Mullingar and Longord.

Horse Racing
Co. Meath contains four horse racing sites which hold numerous events during the year. Point to Point local meetings are very popular among local horse racing followers in the area. Horse racing at Kilbeggan is an action packed spectator sport and on racing nights the quiet midland town is transformed into a festival, social and sporting party.

Horse Riding / Equestrian
There are a couple of equestrian centres present in this area offering riding and trekking over farmland, mountain and forest trails. This region offers a horse riding experience to suit both beginners and the more experienced riders. The beautiful terrain of this region makes it a very suitable horse riding area. For pony trekking, cross country and showjumping call Ross House, 049 85 40218. Equestrian Centre in neighbouring Ross House will meet all your needs on the horse front. They offer pony trekking, riding lessons, cross country or showjumping. It is possible to stable horses if need be.

Sailing
The river Shannon has plenty of opportunities for sailing enthusiasts. Sailing courses are available in some areas. Dromineer and Garrykennedy are ideally suited for those who sail for fun or in competition. The majority of the midland lakes are suitable for sailing and slipways are provided.

Swimming
Swimming Pools and Leisure clubs in Cavan, Mullingar, Longford and Navan

Tennis

Walking
Why not try the Boyne Way - Navan to Slane or the walking trails around Loughcrew Hills. The Cavan Way offers excellent opportunities for the walker, as do the many other trails. Mullaghmeen, which is only a short distance away, is the most well known in this area. With its splendid beauty, this area is a delight for all walkers and all enthusiasts.

Water sports
Banagher provides water sports for all visitors to enjoy. It specializes in Canoeing. Water sports are provided in many areas; Garrykennedy, Ballina and Dromineer. They are frequented by enthusiasts throughout the year and lessons in the various different disciplines are available.

Guests are invited to use the facilities of neighbouring Ross House, which is under related management, including fishing, boating, riding, tennis and shooting.
