The Highlands are famous for their mountainous landscape which becomes rougher and in places like Glencoe, very dramatic. Discover the history in the area and the Massacre of Glencoe. Climbing is popular here, with Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain dominating the landscape. This is a great place for hill walkers and birdwatchers, golden eagles are often seen soaring between the peaks.
Enjoy Benmore Botanic Garden's and the craft shops and museums of Dunoon or discover the real Mull of Kintyre as Paul McCartney sang about. If you have young children then visit Tobermory in Mull – the home of Balamory. The legendary Loch Ness monster is probably the most famous attraction at Loch Ness; perhaps you will be the one who spots it. The many lochs are ideal for many water sports and several centres provide the facilities. Anglers can enjoy the isolation and animal lovers can meet the seals and dolphins.
Reach the northern most part of the country at John O'Groats and discover the Scandinavian influences on the area at the Northlands Viking Centre. Not forgetting the many islands on the west's jagged coastline including Skye. Celebrate with Gaelic music, ceilidhs and sporting events and let the little ones visit the Toy Musuem at Glendale or for the big ones – a taste of whisky from the distillery.
